Benefits of Compostable Packaging

Compostable packaging, with the benefits of its use, is globally recognized as one of the most exciting sustainability solutions, although the full expected level has not yet been reached.

Benefits of Compostable Packaging

At the last European Bioplastics conference, compostable bioplastics were identified as a reliable contributor to the realization of the circular economy. Across the world, the number of companies that are incorporating compostable packaging into the path to material circularity is growing rapidly.

The tendency of packaging producing companies is to pay more attention to ecological impact and respect for the environment. These companies are increasingly using renewable raw materials from sustainable sources and compostable and bio-based bioplastics.

The common goal is to enable the creation of circular products, from the renewability of resources to the recovery of materials. Although compostable packaging is not a definitive solution, it provides an effective alternative to traditional plastic in the right applications.

compostable packaging,

  • It is obtained from materials of organic origin.
  • It is a material that can be recovered through composting and transforms itself into a new resource, reducing the impact on the environment as much as possible.
  • It is a biodegradable packaging and completely decomposes during the composting process, producing carbon dioxide, biomass and water.

There are two important points here:

  • Not all biodegradable bioplastics are also compostable. Compostable biomaterial is one of many types of biodegradable materials that can decompose and fully biodegrade over a period of time and under controlled conditions.
  • The so-called oxo-degradable products are not biodegradable and compostable. Oxo-soluble plastic is conventional plastic in which additives are added to accelerate its decomposition into small pieces. As determined in European Union countries, there is no evidence that oxo-degradable plastic is completely biodegradable within a reasonable time.

Often compostable products are shown as the right for all applications and the ultimate solution to plastic pollution, but this is not true. Still, the benefits of compostable packaging cannot be ignored. Bioplastic and especially biodegradable and compostable bioplastic products certified according to EN 13432 standard include:

  • The use of materials that do not harm the climate
  • Promoting technological innovation targeting circular bioeconomy
  • Improving the recovery of organic waste

Our organization provides very different certification services for businesses in various sectors and carries out the necessary testing, analysis, control and evaluation activities within this framework. In these works, it always follows domestic and foreign standards, applicable legal regulations and generally accepted practices. Our organization has a trained and experienced staff and advanced technological facilities. In this context, requesting businesses,It also provides compost certification and C-Label (Compost Labeling) compost labeling services.
