The full title of this standard is: ASTM D6868-21 Standard specification for the labeling of end products containing plastics and polymers as coatings or additives with paper and other substrates designed to be composted aerobically in municipal or industrial facilities.

To compost satisfactorily in the application of the standard, the product must exhibit one of three characteristics:

• Proper fragmentation during composting
• Sufficient natural biodegradation
• No adverse effects on the ability of composts to support plant growth

This standard covers final items containing plastics or polymers in which plastic films or polymers are incorporated into substrates by lamination, extrusion or mixing, and the entire final product is designed to be composted under aerobic conditions in industrial composting facilities.

This standard provides requirements for labeling end materials using plastics or polymers as coatings or binders as compostable in aerobic industrial composting plants.

The specifications presented in this standard are those required to determine whether the final materials, including packaging using plastics and polymers as coatings or binders, will compost satisfactorily in large-scale aerobic industrial composting with intermediate steps where the highest maximum efficiency is a priority. Plastic biodegradation should not be visible to the end user for aesthetic reasons.
