The purpose of this standard is to establish requirements to identify products and materials to be composted satisfactorily in commercial and municipal composting facilities.

The products covered by the ASTM D6400 standard are plastics and products made of plastics designed to be composted under aerobic conditions in industrial aerobic composting facilities where thermophilic (temperature) conditions are provided. This standard provides requirements for labeling materials and products as compostable in aerobic industrial composting facilities, including packaging made of plastic.

The specifications presented in this standard are those required to determine whether final materials, including packaging using plastics and polymers as coatings or binders, will compost satisfactorily in large-scale industrial composting plants. The highest yield is a high priority for composters and the intermediate stages of plastic degradation and biodegradation are invisible to the end user for aesthetic reasons.

The ASTM D6400 standard is equivalent to the ISO 17088 standard published by the International Standards Organization (ISO) (ISO 17088:2008 Specifications for compostable plastics). This standard also defines the procedures and requirements for the identification and labeling of plastics and products made from plastics suitable for recovery through aerobic composting.
