What is a Compostable Product?

Organic waste can only be properly degraded under certain conditions. Oxygen is needed for microbial organisms to efficiently decompose organic waste.

What is a Compostable Product?

Compostable product means that under ASTM D6400 a product can be processed in municipal or industrial composting facilities.

Compliance with standards such as ASTM D6400 determines the difference between degradable, compostable and biodegradable products. For a product to be defined as a compostable product, it must comply with certain standards.

Commonly used standards for industrial composting are as follows:

  • Specification for labeling of plastics designed to be composted aerobically in municipal or industrial facilities (D6400);
  • Test method for determining the aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions including thermophilic temperatures (D5338);
  • Test method for determining the aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials in the marine environment by a defined microbial consortium or natural seawater vaccine (D6691).

Among these three standards, the D6400 is the most globally recognized and the most used standard for composting.

Our organization provides very different certification services for businesses in various sectors and carries out the necessary testing, analysis, control and evaluation activities within this framework. In these works, it always follows domestic and foreign standards, applicable legal regulations and generally accepted practices. In this framework, it also provides compost certification and C-Label (Compost Labeling) compost labeling services to businesses that request it.
