Composting Past and Present

Composting has been used for thousands of years. For decades, farmers, greenhouse operators, nursery managers, gardeners, backyard gardeners and organic gardeners have been making small compost piles unofficially.

Composting Past and Present

Only in the last few centuries has it seen several surges in popularity, composting is still practiced on a backyard or small farm scale. There have been several notable developments in the last century, including much more research on composting.

Over the last few decades composting has become a sophisticated and somewhat well-researched science. Over time, as the amounts and types of waste products processed and the scope and scale of composting increased, innovative methods were developed to speed up or facilitate the process.

With this came the creation of large-scale composting facilities that could process large volumes of organic waste and produce compost at the scale necessary to support the level of agriculture needed by our thriving population. It is estimated that composting facilities increased from 1989 to almost 1994 in the United States between 2.200 and 3.500. In other developed countries of the world, the steps taken in compost and the investments made in this field are increasing every year.

More and more often, it is now carried out on a large scale as part of local municipal waste management programmes. Today, composting is now seen to contribute to sustainable waste management as well as job creation and income generation.
