What is the Difference Between Compost Industrial and Compost Domestic?

Products bearing the Compost Industrial label are products that are guaranteed to be biodegradable in an industrial composting facility. This label applies to all ingredients, inks and additives.

What is the Difference Between Compost Industrial and Compost Domestic?

Certification studies are carried out in accordance with the EN 13432 standard, which is a European standard. According to this standard,

  • In the compost process, a minimum of 180 percent biodegradation of plastic materials is required within 90 days.
  • At least 90 percent of plastic materials should break into pieces smaller than 12 mm within 2 weeks.
  • The resulting compost has no toxic effect on plants and worms.
  • Hazardous substances such as heavy metals must not exceed the maximum allowable levels.
  • Plastic materials must contain more than 50 percent organic matter.

Compost certified products are products that are composted only in industrial composting facilities at temperatures between 55 and 60 degrees Celsius. Compost Domestic certified products are products that are composted at lower temperatures so that they can enter the compost pile at home or in the garden. Due to the relatively smaller waste volume, the temperature in a garden compost pile is clearly lower and less constant than in an industrial composting environment. Therefore, composting in the garden is a more difficult and slower process.

However, in order to overcome this challenge, the Compost Domestic program has been developed to guarantee full biodegradability even in the garden compost pile, in light of special requirements. Compost Domestic is not based on a standard, but forms the basis of several standards.

The Compost Domestic certification program does not explicitly refer to a specific standard, but details all the technical requirements a product must meet to obtain certification. Therefore, it forms the basis for the preparation of the following standards:

  • Australia: AS 5810 Biodegradable plastics - Biodegradable plastics suitable for home composting
  • France: NF T 51800 Plastics - Specifications for plastics suitable for home composting
  • Europe: prEN 17427 Packaging - Requirements and test chart for transport bags suitable for processing in well-managed home composting facilities
