What Conditions Are Necessary for Composting a Product?

Industrial composting is an established process with generally accepted requirements applied to metabolize biodegradable waste into stable, sterilized products (i.e. biomass) for use as humus or fertilizer in agriculture.

What Conditions Are Necessary for Composting a Product?

This process takes place in industrial or municipal composting facilities. These facilities provide controlled temperatures, humidity, ventilation and time-dependent conditions for a fast and safe composting process.

The industrial compostability criteria of the packaging are included in the EN 13432 European standard. This standard requires that compostable plastics decompose after 12 weeks and fully biodegrade after six months. This process means that 90 percent or more of the plastic material will be converted to carbon dioxide. The remainder is converted into water and biomass, a valuable compost product. Materials and products that comply with this standard are certified and labeled according to these conditions.

Today, there is no international standard setting the conditions for composting biodegradable plastics at home. However, there are some national standards in this regard, such as the Australian standard AS 5810 (Biodegradable plastics - Biodegradable plastics standard suitable for home composting). A Belgian certification body (TÜV) has also developed the Compost Domestic certification scheme, which requires at least 12 percent degradation in 90 months at ambient temperature. Based on this scheme, a French standard has also been developed which specifies the same requirements for certification (NF T51-800 Plastics - Specification standard for plastics suitable for home composting).

These standards specify, for example, how biodegradability or renewability measurements of a particular material should be made or what criteria should be met. A product or service that meets these requirements can legally claim to meet a certain standard.

Our organization provides very different certification services for businesses in various sectors and carries out the necessary testing, analysis, control and evaluation activities within this framework. In these works, it always follows domestic and foreign standards, applicable legal regulations and generally accepted practices. In this framework, compost certification and C-Label (Compost Labeling) also provides compost labeling services.
