prEN 17427 Packaging - Requirements and Test Chart for Handling Bags Suitable for Processing in Well Managed Home Composting Facilities

The prEN 17427 standard, a European standard, provides a test scheme and requirements for identifying carrier bags of any material considered suitable for inclusion in well-managed home composting facilities operated for personal use in the home.

Transport bags are considered suitable for home composting only if all components meet the requirements.

Topics covered in this standard are as follows:

  • Characterization
  • biodegradation
  • Decomposition during home composting
  • compost quality
  • Recognizability

The first four of these evaluate the effects on the biological treatment process and the compost made by it. The last feature provides end-user recognition of home compostable carrier bags.

The prEN 17427 standard provides a basis for labeling carrier bags made of any material considered suitable for inclusion in well-managed home composting facilities.

However, the fact that the transport bags entering the compost comply with the requirements of this document does not necessarily mean that a high quality compost will be produced.

This standard covers home compostability of carry bags, but does not address current regulations regarding home composting of any residual content.

In addition, the test scheme and requirements in this standard do not apply to vermicomposting or industrial composting. Nor does it provide information on the biodegradability of transport bags that remain as garbage in the environment.

The testing scheme and evaluation criteria provided in this standard can be the basis for determining the suitability of other products for home composting.

The prEN 17427 standard is under design and has not yet been published, but is expected to be published soon. This standard is expected to summarize all test procedures for home composting of carry bags. In this way, products made from bioplastic will go through more testing procedures than traditional plastic products.
