Compostable or Recyclable, Which Is Better?

Polylactic acid (PLA) is the most common polymer used for biodegradable plastics. Some are made of different types of biodegradable plastic that can be more easily composted in the backyard. It is therefore debated which of the two options is more sustainable: recyclable plastics or biodegradable plastics?

Compostable or Recyclable, Which Is Better?

It is already known that incineration is not the best method for disposal. This process is often described as a waste-to-energy conversion, but it has also been suggested to cause air pollution as it contributes to the already problematic carbon emissions and adds other toxins to the atmosphere.

But it's also a fact: making most plastics takes much longer and takes much more energy than it takes time and energy to use that plastic. In order not to waste the energy spent in production, the product life should be much longer. It doesn't make sense to throw away a barely worn shoe, the same goes for plastic.

Using recycled plastic means replacing the need for virgin plastic. Composting does not replace the need for untreated plastic, a plastic product is freed after just one use. That way, instead of having the material from which the next plastic product will be made, it will be organic compost to fertilize a garden. Recycling still takes energy, but composting does not.

One of the disadvantages of recycling is that eventually the plastic material breaks down from being reused and recycled many times or has to face some other method of disposal. This is where composting would be the best option. A product with the longest life and the most harmless end will be one that can be recycled several times and eventually composted when the plastic is too weak.

Composting and recycling have advantages and disadvantages compared to each other. Best of all, they don't have to choose and they work with each other to make the habits as environmentally friendly as possible.
