The home composting system is quite different from the composting system applied in an industrial facility. However, the basic requirements for the certificate remain the same. For a plastic material to be certified to the Australian standard AS 5810, it must pass stringent testing conducted by a recognized and accredited third-party organization.

Due to the differences between a home compost system and an industrial compost plant, the test period for this standard is a maximum of 12 months. However, the final results remain the same as the AS 4736 standard. This means at least 90 percent biodegradation, no compost, no toxic effects on plants and earthworms, and materials should contain more than half organic material.

After successful completion of testing, applicants are certified as home compostable on their packaging and licensed to use the C-Label label. This label will help the end consumer, customers or municipal authorities to recognize and properly dispose of compostable packaging. More importantly, this label states that claims of conformity to the AS 5810 standard are authentic and verified by an independent organization.

The C-Label label is a symbol that the product confirms its biodegradability and compostability claims in accordance with the relevant standard.

Due to the extreme and stringent requirements of the AS 5810 standard, it is true that any product that meets the home compostable standard will meet the industrial standard. However, the reverse is not always true. The fact of the matter is, the choice of which certificate to settle with depends on who the end user is.

Industrial compost systems are not widely available and accessible in all parts of the world. It is therefore best to choose packaging that is AS 5810 certified, as this will allow anyone with a home compost system to do so.
