The AS 4736 standard provides a basis for allowing materials or products made of plastic to be labeled as compostable for use in facilities such as municipal or industrial composting facilities. This standard also applies to the processing of plastics in controlled waste treatment plants.

Products and materials conforming to this standard are compostable and biodegradable plastics. The label on these products clearly identifies the packaging materials as biodegradable and compostable. For a product to be certified as compostable and to carry this label, suitable biopolymer materials must undergo a rigorous testing regime in the AS 4736 standard and conducted by recognized independent accredited laboratories.

After successful completion of the tests, a C-Label certification application can be made for the biodegradable product. The C-Label label is a symbol that the product confirms its biodegradability and compostability claims in accordance with the relevant standard.

Using the C-Label label helps the end consumer, customers or municipal authorities to identify compostable packaging and dispose of it accordingly. More importantly, this label indicates the authenticity of the relevant claims of conformity and that they have been verified by an independent organization.
